#1. Why is it important to stop at stop lines?

Many intersections are marked with stop lines to show where you must come to a complete stop. These stop lines help to set you farther back at an intersection to give larger vehicles more turning space. Always stop behind stop lines.

What are Stop Lines?

A stop line is a broad white line painted across the street. It informs you that you must stop and where to stop your car.

You will typically see a stop sign or a traffic light at intersections with a painted stop line.

Some Driver Handbooks and manuals (like the California Driver Handbook) refer to a limit line instead of a stop line.

Where to Stop

If you see a stop line, you must always stop behind the line.

If the intersection doesn’t have a stop line, you must stop before a marked crosswalk.

Some intersections don’t have stop lines or crosswalk markings. In that case, you must stop before entering the crossroad.

You must yield to pedestrians and check for traffic before proceeding. Never enter an intersection if you cannot move entirely through. Blocking an intersection is against the law.

The Purpose of a Stop Line

The primary purpose of stop lines is to set you farther back at an intersection and give larger vehicles more turning space.

Remember that larger vehicles often must swing wide at intersections.
