This is not a passing score. Do you want to try again?

#1. The primary purpose of this sign is to alert you to the following:
Side road. Another road enters the highway from the direction shown. Watch for traffic from that direction

#2. To be safe, car tires must have a minimum tread depth of:
Check your tires and air pressure often. Remember, it is not safe to drive on tires with less than 1/16 inch of tread.
Good tire tread helps water escape quickly through the grooves and helps prevent hydroplaning. Worn or bald tires can increase your stopping distance and make turning more difficult when the road is wet. Worn tires also increase the chance of having a flat tire.

#3. Which background color is used for motorist service signs?
Motorist services signs are white on blue. They direct you to services, such as gas, food, motels, and hospitals. Blue is also used to identify parking spaces for disabled drivers.

#4. When stopping and yielding to a blind pedestrian in a crosswalk, you should keep a distance of:
Do not stop your car more than five feet from the crosswalk. The blind pedestrian uses the sound of your engine as a guide, so drive up to the crosswalk to allow the person to hear you.

#5. Where is it illegal to park a vehicle?
Parking is not allowed in front of a driveway.

#6. Visitors with a driver's license from another state in the U.S. may drive in Louisiana, if:
You do not need a Louisiana driver’s license if you are a non-resident and possess a valid license issued by another state. You are permitted to drive in this state for a period of 90 days.

#7. To prevent drowsy driving, it is recommended that you stop for regular breaks at least:
Take regular breaks. Stop every two hours to stretch, even if you do not feel tired.

#8. If your vehicle begins to hydroplane, you should:
The best thing to do is to take your foot off the accelerator and let the car slow down.
Partial hydroplaning starts at about 35 miles per hour and increases with speed until the tires may lose all contact with the pavement. When this happens, you lose traction, and you cannot brake, accelerate, or turn. To recover, keep your wheels straight and reduce your speed. This will allow the tires and the road to regain contact.

#9. What does this sign mean?
You will see this sign near school buildings or grounds. It warns you to slow down, drive with extreme caution and watch for children.

#10. It is a good idea to use your high-beam headlights in the following situations except:
Remember, you should not use your high-beam headlights in fog.
When driving in a heavy downpour or in fog, slow down and turn on your low beam headlights.
This question asked when you should not use your high-beam headlights.

#11. For normal driving in a vehicle with airbags, it is best to grip the steering wheel by:
In vehicles equipped with airbags, use the 9 and 3 position or 8 and 4 hand position.

#12. When approaching a stopped school bus with flashing red lights traveling on your side of an undivided highway with four or more lanes, you must:
You must stop at least thirty feet from a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading children. This is required by law whether you are meeting the bus or traveling behind it.
When a school bus is stopped in opposite lanes on a roadway separated by a ditch, grassy median, elevated concrete barrier or any obstacle that prevents traffic from driving thereon, you are not required to stop.

#13. When driving on interstate highways under normal roadway conditions, you may not drive slower than:
Statuary speed limit on rural interstates and freeways is 70 mph. Interstate highways also have minimum speed limits. If this minimum speed is too fast for you, then you should use another route. You may not drive slower than 40 mph on interstate highways under normal roadway conditions.

#14. This sign tells you:
This is a regulatory speed limit sign. It shows the maximum speed you are allowed to travel under ideal conditions.

#15. What does this sign mean?
A yield sign is a downward pointing triangle. It is red and white with red letters. You will see no other signs of this shape on the highway.
Slow down and give vehicles crossing your path the right-of-way. If the way is clear, you may move forward slowly without stopping. Yield signs are usually placed where auxiliary roads lead into major roads.

#16. When you see a truck preparing for a right turn ahead, you should:
In some instances, truck drivers need to swing wide to the left in order to safely negotiate a right turn, especially in urban areas. They cannot see cars directly behind or beside them. Cutting in between the truck and the curb increases the possibility of a crash. So pay attention to truck signals and give truck drivers lots of room to maneuver.

#17. What should you use the area in the center of this road for?
On many streets where it is difficult to safely make a left turn, there is a shared left turn lane located in the middle of the roadway. The solid yellow center line means you cannot use the center lane for passing. The broken yellow center lines show that vehicles traveling in either direction may use the center lane only to make left turns. Louisiana law prohibits traveling in this lane for more than 200 feet. Do not move into the lane too soon.
If a two-way left turn lane has been provided, do not make a left turn from any other lane.

#18. If you see a deer crossing the road, you should:
If you see one animal, expect there is another nearby since they travel in groups. Slow down or stop. Do not use the horn or rev the engine. Pass as far away from the animals as possible.

#19. Which of the following vehicles must always stop before crossing railroad tracks?
Watch for vehicles that must stop at railroad crossings. Drivers of vehicles carrying passengers for hire, school buses or trucks, or any vehicle carrying explosives or flammable liquids must stop at railroad crossings. Do not pass them unless it is legal to do so and there are no unsafe conditions. You should have a clear view of the tracks.
Remember, if you are following this type of vehicle you should slow down and be prepared to stop.

#20. In general, in which drink will you find the most alcohol?
There is generally more alcohol in 20 oz. of beer.
It does not matter whether you drink beer, wine, whiskey, or any other alcoholic beverages. Standard servings of each have the same amount of alcohol. A standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 4-5 ounces of wine, or 1-1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits, all of which contain the same amount of alcohol. It is the amount of alcohol that enters your blood that causes the problem.

#21. When driving in fog, you should:
When driving in a heavy downpour or in fog, slow down and turn on your low beam headlights. High beams create glare that reflects back into your eyes and will impair your visibility.

#22. When an emergency vehicle with flashing red lights approaches from the other direction, you must:
You must yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles that are sounding a siren and flashing warning lights. Pull over to the right edge of the roadway clear of intersections and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed. This applies to traffic in both directions.

#23. A traffic signal with a yellow arrow means:
Yellow arrows come after green arrows to indicate that the protected movement indicated by the green arrow is being terminated.

#24. If you are involved in a traffic crash, and someone is injured, it is generally wrong to:
If you are not trained in first aid, remember that there are only a few things that you can do:
- Summon help.
- Try to help the injured where they lie in order of their needs. Keep them warm.
- To stop bleeding, place a clean cloth over the wound.
- If a person has stopped breathing, give first aid if you know how.
- Do not move the injured person unless there is immediate life-threatening danger. Movement could cause more injury.
- Ask a walking injured person to sit or lie down on his back. If the person is bleeding from the lower part of the face or jaw, turn him on his side. Do not give fluids.
- You should not try to take an injured person to the hospital yourself unless there is no way to get help. With serious injuries, improper movement may be harmful.

#25. When being passed by another vehicle, you must:
When you are about to be overtaken and passed, make it as safe and easy as possible for the other driver. Slow your speed a little and, if on a two-lane highway, move over to the right as far as you safely can.

The Real Written Knowledge Test for Your Permit
The written knowledge test in Louisiana has 40 questions. You must reach a score of at least 80% to pass. This means you can only miss 8 out of the 40 questions.
The test has many questions about common road signs and the meaning of traffic light signals.
In addition to knowing the meaning of some road signs, you must also be able to identify signs by their shape and color .
There are also questions about your responsibility as a driver, including knowledge of Louisiana vehicle laws, safe driving practices, and impaired driving.
All new drivers, regardless of age, must complete a driver education or pre-licensing course before Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) issues a permit or adult driver’s license.
These courses are offered by driver education providers who are licensed by the LA Department of Public Safety and some secondary schools. You complete the knowledge test as part of these courses.
Wait time before a re-test is at the discretion of the examiner.
Drivers with an out of country license must also show proof of a driver education training. Drivers with a valid license from Canada, Germany, Switzerland, and Taiwan are exempt from the driver education training requirement, knowledge and road skills tests but are required to pass the vision test.
How to Study for Your Permit or License
If you haven’t done so already, get a copy of the Driver’s Guide online , your third-party education provider, or from your nearest Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) .
OMV recommends that you read through the Driver’s Guide at least three times. They also tell you to focus on memorizing numeric information in the guide like lengths, distances, measurements, etc.
Check your knowledge of some important numbers here
Even if we acknowledge that numbers can be hard to remember, we still think that your main priority should be to focus on true understanding of traffic signs and signals, pavement markings, right-of-way rules, and safe driving practices. Such knowledge will help more on the knowledge test and on the road when you finally get your Temporary Permit and Driver’s License.
After all, learning the rules of the road is all about your safety once you hit the highway.
Read more about our study tips: Ace the DMV Test .
When you are comfortable with your understanding of Louisiana rules of the road, you will also find that most numbers make more sense and, hopefully, are easy to remember.

Who Must Take the Louisiana Knowledge Test?
All first-time applicants.
Anyone who hasn’t been licensed before must pass the Louisiana knowledge test to get a Learner’s Permit.
Holders of a Louisiana license that has been expired more than 12 months.
If you hold a driver’s license from Louisiana or another state and let it expire more than 12 months, you must start over and take all tests again.
If your license has been expired for 12 months or less, you don’t have to take the test.
Holders of a foreign license.
If you have an out-of-country license you must successfully pass a driver education course, the knowledge exam, and the behind-the-wheel test, before you can get a Louisiana license.
Applicants with a driver’s license from Canada, Germany, Switzerland, and Taiwan are exempt from the knowledge exam and road skills test.
Drivers who have had their license revoked.
A revocation of your license means your license is canceled and there is no automatic reinstatement procedure. You must submit to an investigation before you can apply for a new license.
If You Have an Out-of-state License
Applicants with an out-of-state license don’t have to take the knowledge or skills test, unless they let their license expire for more than 12 months. They must, however, pass a new vision test and have your photo taken.
Before You Can Take the Test
To apply for a Louisiana permit, you must:
- Show proof of residency
- Have proof of legal presence in United States, if applicable
- Meet minimum physical and mental requirements
- Provide current proof of school enrollment if you are a minor
- Have completed a driver education training course
- Pass a vision and knowledge test
Anyone applying for their first driver’s license must complete a driver education training course. This applies to both teenagers and adults.
Since 2018, OMV will issue a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) after your license application is registered.
You must present this temporary permit to an enrolled driver education provider before they will give a knowledge test, let you drive during a driving skills instruction, or take an on-road driving skills test. Always keep this TIP in your possession when driving.
If you are at least 15 years old and less than 17 years, you must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction.
If you are 17 years or older and haven’t entered the graduated licensing program, you must complete a 38-hour education course or a 6-hour pre-licensing course and an 8-hour behind-the-wheel course.
What is the Graduated Licensing Program?
The Louisiana Graduated Driver Licensing Program (GDL) has three steps:
1 The Learner’s Permit
After completion of the driver education course and after you have passed pass a vision and knowledge test, OMV will convert your TIP to a Learner’s Permit.
The Learner’s Permit allows you to practice driving with a licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least 21 years. You may also drive with a licensed sibling who is at least 18 years.
During this step you must practice driving for a minimum of 50 hours, with at least 15 hours at night.
If you are at least 15 years and under 16 years, you must hold your permit for a minimum of 180 days AND until you are 16 years.
If you are at least 16 years and under 17 years, you must hold your permit for a minimum of 180 days AND until you are 17 years.
When you are 17 years, you may apply for either a learner’s permit or full license.
2 The Intermediate License
An intermediate license is the next step in Louisiana’s GDL program. With the intermediate driver’s license you can drive unsupervised under certain restrictions.
To get an intermediate license, you must present a verified log showing at least 50 hours of driving practice with a licensed adult driver. You must also pass a road skills test, also known as a behind-the-wheel test.
The license comes with a night curfew and a passenger restriction.
No driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
You may only drive at night if accompanied by a licensed adult at least 21 years or a sibling at least 18 years.
No more than one passenger under 21 years between 6:00 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Between 6:00 p.m. and 5 a.m. you cannot transport more than one passenger who is under 21 years and not a member of your immediate family.
All passengers must wear a seat belt.
No handheld cellphone while driving.
The restriction doesn’t apply to any calls made to report an emergency or criminal activity.
3 The Full License
If you have entered the GDL program (step 1 and 2), you must hold your intermediate license until you turn 17.
At age 17, you are eligible for a full unrestricted license.
If you are 17 years and haven’t completed the GDL program you may apply for a full license or a learner’s permit after completing the full driver’s education course OR a pre-licensing course.
Where do I take the Test?
The knowledge and skills tests are normally administered by the driver education provider. Only teenagers that get their driver education course from a secondary school that does not provide the knowledge or skills test may request OMV to provide the testing.
Can I Take the Test in Another Language?
Unlike many other states, Louisiana does not offer the knowledge test in any other language besides English. You may, however, have an interpreter to translate for you during the examination process.
You may request an oral test, but make sure you check with your education provider or your OMV service office.
What Happens if I Fail the Louisiana Test?
If you fail the test, you can take the test again the same day. You may, however, be placed back in rotation to await your turn at a service office or third-party provider. You can only re-test once per day.
Any attempt to cheat on the test will result in a discontinued and failed test. After cheating, you must wait a minimum of 30 days before you can try again.
