Teen Drivers with Unresolved Traffic Citations
As of January 1, 2014, Kelsey’s Law is in effect in Illinois. The new law is aimed to stop anyone under 18 who has an unresolved traffic citation from getting a driver’s license.
Teen drivers must report if they have a pending case in court dealing with a traffic violation. If the answer is yes, or if the teen driver is caught lying, the application is invalidated.
The new law is named after Kelsey Little who was seriously injured in a car crash by a young driver on a learner’s permit. Three days after the accident, the river applied for and was issued a driver’s license. The Secretary of State was unaware of the accident due to the lack of a reporting requirement.
