Practice Tests for Colorado Instruction Permits
All new drivers must get an instruction permit before being eligible for a Colorado Driver’s license.
DMV can issue the instruction permit after applicants pass the vision exam and a written knowledge test.
This practice test prepares you for that knowledge test. It has 25 random questions, just like the actual written examination.
Each test is multiple-choice, and you will get instant feedback after each question. If your answer needs to be corrected, there will also be a brief explanation to help you look up the corresponding item in the Colorado Driver Handbook.
1 Start by Reading the Colorado Driver Handbook

The latest version of the Colorado Driver Handbook is your best friend when studying for a re-examination or your first instruction permit. Ensure you get a copy from your nearest driver licensing office or download the handbook online.
Answers to exam questions are always taken directly from this booklet.
2 Take Practice Tests to Verify What You Have Learned
After studying the handbook, take many practice tests. They will tell you whether you are ready for the real knowledge exam.

We draw random questions from an extensive question bank, meaning no two tests are identical. Random tests give you many chances to practice.
It is best not to use the practice tests to replace the handbook. You will learn faster if you use both the manual and the practice tests.
Even if you can miss five exam questions and still pass, your best strategy is to aim for a total score when practicing.
Read the question and answer choices all the way through. Don’t jump at the first answer that looks right. Words like “safe,” “slowly,” or “carefully” can easily trick you.
Some alternatives can also be correct statements but have nothing to do with what the question asks.
Always double-check to make sure your answer makes sense.
3 Give it Time
A common mistake is to start studying for your permit just days before the examination.
Even if some people are good at cramming before a test, your new knowledge is less likely to stick, resulting in more mistakes when you drive in traffic.
It is better to start several weeks before the written test and give the handbook and practice tests a lot of time.
Don’t forget Colorado DMV’s purpose with the test! They want to ensure you have studied the handbook and learned the essential driving rules.

How Many Questions are on the Official Examination?
The official knowledge examination consists of 25 multiple-choice questions.
