Ohio Written Knowledge Test
Who Must Take the Test?
All persons applying for a first Ohio motor vehicle driver license must pass a written test that is given in two parts and covers Ohio motor vehicle regulations and traffic sign.
These requirements also apply to drivers who have allowed their license to expire for more than six months and to persons who must apply for a new license after losing their license due to a suspension or revocation.
New residents with a valid out-of-state license may be required to take the vision and knowledge tests. If you are under suspension or revocation, you will not be eligible for an Ohio license until you provide a clearance letter.
If you are a holder of a valid foreign driver license and wish to convert to an
Ohio driver license, you must take and pass all required tests (vision, knowledge, driving and maneuverability).
Ohio Knowledge Test
The written knowledge test is a test on Ohio traffic laws and signs.
All questions on the knowledge exam are based on information from the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws.
The Ohio knowledge test is available in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, French, Somali and Japanese. For tests in any other language, please contact your local driver license exam station. Remember that you must always be able to understand directions and read traffic signs printed in English.
If you cannot read or write well enough to take a knowledge test, an audio version of the test in English is available.
Hearing impaired who are unable to read or write well enough may take a knowledge test administered by an interpreter or in video format.
If you fail the knowledge test, you must wait at least one day before retaking the exam.
Are You Ready for Your Drivers Permit Test?
Read the state Driver's Manual or Handbook. All real permit test questions are based on the material in this manual. Get familiar with all areas and learn the laws and rules presented. Pay special attention to facts that are bolded or highlighted.
Give yourself plenty of time. Start preparing at least two weeks before the real test.
Take several of our driver permit practice tests to make sure you are ready for the real examination.
Our Practice Tests
Our permit and license practice tests contain 25 questions. You must correctly answer 20 questions to pass (80%). This is a common passing score in most states. You should, however, aim for a score of 90% or more on a permit practice test.
Read all questions and answers carefully. You will see many DMV test answers, but do NOT focus on memorizing exact phrases - focus on understanding! The practice permit test questions may be repeated with several different alternatives and different wording. Real DMV permit test questions are created the same way.
All questions are multiple-choice or true/false. Only one alternative is correct and acceptable. If you see All of the above, None of the above, or similar as one alternative, make sure you evaluate all alternatives carefully.
