Who Must Take the Test?
All new drivers are required to pass the knowledge test.
When reinstating a revoked Delaware driver's license, you must apply for a new license. You will be required to complete all driver license written, road, and eye-screen tests before reinstating your license.
When reinstating a suspended Delaware driver's license, you may also be required to complete all driver license written, road, and eye-screen tests before reinstating your license.
When renewing an expired Delaware driver's license, a written test may be required at the discretion of the examiner.
When you wish to transfer a driver's license from another state in United States, Germany, Taiwan (Republic of China) and France and the license has expired, a written test is usually required. Written test is waived if your license is valid.
The written knowledge test is always required when you wish to transfer a driver's license from a country other than United States, Germany, Taiwan (Republic of China) and France. (This includes U.S. Territories.)
Delaware Knowledge Test
You will be asked to identify certain highway signs only by their shape, color, or the symbols appearing on them. You will also be asked about the meaning of these and other highway signs, traffic signals, and pavement markings.
A second part of the test will cover Delaware motor vehicle laws and general safety practices.
All questions are based on the information in Delaware Driver Manual. You should study this manual carefully. The test will contain questions from all sections of the manual. Make sure you discuss and get more information about anything which is not perfectly clear.
The Class D knowledge test consists of 30 questions of which 24 must be answered correctly to pass the test.
Are You Ready for Your Drivers Permit Test?
Read the state Driver's Manual or Handbook. All real permit test questions are based on the material in this manual. Get familiar with all areas and learn the laws and rules presented. Pay special attention to facts that are bolded or highlighted.
Give yourself plenty of time. Start preparing at least two weeks before the real test.
Take several of our driver permit practice tests to make sure you are ready for the real examination.
Our Practice Tests
Our permit and license practice tests contain 25 questions. You must correctly answer 20 questions to pass (80%). This is a common passing score in most states. You should, however, aim for a score of 90% or more on a permit practice test.
Read all questions and answers carefully. You will see many DMV test answers, but do NOT focus on memorizing exact phrases - focus on understanding! The practice permit test questions may be repeated with several different alternatives and different wording. Real DMV permit test questions are created the same way.
All questions are multiple-choice or true/false. Only one alternative is correct and acceptable. If you see All of the above, None of the above, or similar as one alternative, make sure you evaluate all alternatives carefully.
