Zipcar and Ford
Zipcar is a membership-based car sharing company. It is an alternative to your traditional car rental. It is found in most major cities across the U.S. and on many college campuses. The company currently has 730,000 members and offers 11,000 vehicles throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain and Austria.

This makes Zipcar the world’s leading car sharing network.

Some of United State’s most notable colleges and universities are using Zipcar. The University programs provide students with access to transportation without having to own a car. Low hourly and daily rates include the cost of fuel and insurance. You can rent a car for as little as one hour.

The costs:

When you join you pay a $50 annual fee and a $25 application fee.

When you drive on a weekday hourly rates start at $8 and daily rates at $66. A little more on weekends. Gas, insurance and 180 free miles are included. If you are a college student, you can rent a Zipcar without paying a surcharge for being under age 25.

How it works:

You complete the online application, which takes just a few minutes. If approved, you will get your Zipcard in a few days. With your Zipcard, you can book a vehicle.

You book online or over the phone. You choose the car you want, there are MINIs, BMWs, hybrids, even pickups. Choose the time slot you want at the location you want. Reserve minutes or months in advance.

Your Zipcard will only open the car you’ve reserved during the time you’ve reserved it (which means no one else can open your car during that time, either). All you do is walk to the car and hold your card to the windshield. Now it is unlocked.

When you’re finished driving, just bring your car back and park it in the same reserved parking spot.

Of the Ford vehicles available to college and university students through Zipcar, the Ford Focus models account for 90 percent.
