The 2016 update to our DMV practice test is now launched. While some old questions have been removed from the test, several new questions have been added. As always, this is the most reliable and up-to-date license and driving permit practice test you can find online. And it is free.

Studies show that reliability improve with larger numbers of questions the practice tests. No other site has as many questions as Driver’s Prep. This will help you prepare with much less effort and ace the real test.

What You Need to Know

Remember, the California knowledge test is based on information contained in the California Driver Handbook. If you don’t have a printed copy of this booklet, download the pdf-version from It is a must-have!

To pass the knowledge test, you must demonstrate a good understanding of California traffic laws and safe driving techniques. You must also be able to read and understand highway signs regulating, warning and directing traffic, even if California DMV doesn’t put as much focus on this as other states.

Most questions on the California DMV test deal with driving situations and safe traffic maneuvers.

How to Use the DMV Practice Test

The DMV practice tests at Driver’s Prep contains sample questions from real DMV tests. Tests are the Multiple Choice type. Meaning, you are asked to select the best possible answer out of three choices. By using the DMV practice test you will get a good understanding of what the questions will look like and how they are worded.

Remember to read everything carefully. This is probably the single most important thing you can do to master both the practice test and the real knowledge test.

Take several practice tests. Make a note of the questions you miss. Go back to the handbook and study those chapters again. Then, take some new practice tests. Don’t guess on the practice test! The test is good drivers education and your way of making sure that you will pass the real thing. If you don’t know or understand an answer, you need to study the handbook again.

When you reach a passing score of more than 90% without any problems, you are probably ready for the real test.
