Changes to License Rules in Iowa

Iowa License Holder

Instruction Permit

In Iowa you must now hold an instruction permit for at least 12 consecutive months (previously six months) before applying for an intermediate license. You must also maintain a clean driving record for at least six consecutive months immediately before applying for the intermediate license.

Between 2014 and 2018 the expiry date for a license will be set for a period of five to eight years (previously up to five years).

New Eight-Year License Term

Between 2014 and 2018, Iowa will transition from a standard five-year license term to an eight-year license term. During this time, Iowa driver’s licenses will be issued with a randomly assigned expiration date between five and eight years. This does not apply if you are younger than 17 years and 11 months or if you are 67 years or older. See below:

Age Expiration date
Younger than 17 years and 11 months Two years
Older than 17 years and 11 months – through 66 years Five to eight years (selected randomly)
