New Car Reliability Ratings

Consumer Reports 2013 new car reliability ratings are released and will appear on newsstands in mid-November.

Ratings are based on detailed data on about 1.1 million vehicles, collected from magazine and website subscribers. Consumer Reports asks about owner experiences during the previous 12 months and now covers 10 model years.

Plagued With Problems

As last year, Ford models are still plagued with troublesome in-car electronics and the touch-screen system. Ford also scores low due to the EcoBoost turbocharged V6 engines.

Kia falls below top ten on the list of most reliable brands this year, whereas Volvo is up from #20 to #7.

All models from Audi, GMC, and Volvo scored average or better.

Lexus RX is number one in reliability among luxury and large SUVs.

  1. Lexus – 8 models.
  2. Toyota – 26 models.
  3. Acura – 4 models.
  4. Audi – 10 models.
  5. Mazda – 6 models.
  6. Infiniti – 8 models.
  7. Volvo – 3 models.
  8. Honda – 16 models.
  9. GMC – 7 models.
  10. Subaru – 10 models.

Most Reliable Compacts and Subcompacts

Some of the most reliable models in the compact/subcompact class are:

  • Scion xB
  • Honda Fit
  • Dodge Dart (2.0L)
  • Subaru Impreza
  • Honda Civic Sedan
  • Volkswagen Golf
  • Honda Civic Coupe

Least Reliable Compacts and Subcompacts

Some of the least reliable models in the compact/subcompact class are:

  • Volkswagen Beetle
  • Hyundai Veloster (turbo)
  • Ford Focus
  • Chevrolet Cruze (1.8)
  • Fiat 500
  • Ford Fiesta

Most Reliable Midsized

Some of the most reliable models in the midsized class are:

  • Subaru Legacy (4-cyl.)
  • Toyota Camry (4-cyl.)

Least Reliable Midsized

… and worst:

  • Nissan Altima
  • Ford Fusion (1.6L EcoBoost)
